MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google plans to restrict the options for the Gemini model available to free personal accounts starting October 9, 2026. Individuals without a Google AI subscription will still be able to access Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps, but will lose access to Flash or Pro under the new rules. Google outlined these updates in its revised support documentation for its consumer artificial intelligence offerings. These changes specifically impact personal Google accounts, not those managed through workplaces or educational institutions.

Customers subscribed to Google AI Plus will continue to be able to use Flash-Lite and Flash after the modifications are implemented. Nevertheless, their subscription will no longer include access to Pro. Google has not specified a single transition date for all AI Plus users, but states that affected customers will be notified via email about when their access will change. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will retain access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Designed as an efficient Gemini model, Flash-Lite offers rapid responses suited for everyday and common tasks. The Flash model provides extra capabilities while maintaining quick reply times across various request types. Pro is aimed at more complex tasks, such as advanced mathematics, coding, and in-depth analysis. Google claims the model can handle text, files, images, and video, employing deeper reasoning. Pro responses may also take longer to generate compared to other Gemini models.
Wider model access remains for paid Gemini plans
Google is introducing adjustable effort levels—low, medium, and high—within models available to users based on their plan. Higher effort settings allow models to dedicate more resources to produce detailed responses, but also consume more of the usage allowance. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will get access to Deep Think, a feature for complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that applies maximum parallel reasoning for handling intricate requests.
These new restrictions follow earlier modifications to how Gemini Apps track usage. Google implemented compute-based limits on May 17, 2026, with allowances resetting every five hours until the weekly cap is reached. The calculation factors in prompt complexity, feature usage, and conversation length. Premium features and advanced models can deplete these allowances faster than standard requests. On July 24, Google extended these usage-limit rules to users under 18.
Usage caps vary by subscription level for Google AI plans
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to the service’s default usage limits. AI Plus members enjoy twice the normal allowance, while AI Pro subscribers are granted four times that amount. AI Ultra accounts can use either five or twenty times the AI Pro limit, depending on their specific plan. Features like Deep Research, media generation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think are capable of consuming larger portions of these quotas. Consequently, paid plans provide not only broader model access but also higher usage thresholds.
These October updates specifically affect Gemini Apps accessed through personal Google accounts and do not regulate all Google AI services. Work and school accounts are governed by different access rules, and developer services follow separate policies. Users have the ability to manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel their Google AI plans via Gemini Apps and Google One. Starting October 9, free personal users will rely solely on Flash-Lite, no longer having access to Flash or Pro. Google also recommends keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the revised access policies are implemented.
